LAGRANGE, Ga.—Malia Melton and Keimarya Rivera both posted double-doubles in a 56-51 road win for the Oglethorpe women's basketball team versus the LaGrange Panthers Wednesday evening. Freshman Marlie Battle led the team with a career high 15 points.
A fast-break layup by Melton began the offensive run for the Petrels in the first quarter. Points put up by Battle and two good free throws from Sheraton Foster gave the Stormy Petrels room to work against a strong Panthers defense. They drew four fouls in the first quarter and shot 75% from the free throw line.
The Petrels heated up in the second quarter with shots from Rivera, Battle and Melton. A drained three from Melton followed by a layup from Rivera increased the score to 21-12, the Petrels' largest lead yet. Shooting 61% (8-13) from the field and tallying 13 rebounds allowed for the Petrels to gain the lead and never look back.
Continued offense from Rivera, Battle, Melton, Foster and Jaden Winfrey maintained the lead and kept the Panthers at bay. Despite LaGrange's last-minute efforts to equalize the score, the Petrels held them to a five-point lead and finished 56-51.
