ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels wrapped up their 2025 campaign with 3-0 wins over LaGrange and Huntingdon while celebrating senior day on Saturday.
Match One vs. LaGrange
Five seniors were honored before the match started: Laney Higgins, Morgan Phillips, Gracie Sims, Ashlynn Stephens and Madison Williams.
Stephens led with nine kills, 12 digs and two aces. Sims followed with eight kills and 10 digs, while Williams made three blocks.
Stephens made a kill for the first point of the match, but the Panthers got on the board soon enough. LaGrange stayed close to the Petrels but never quite found an edge. Williams made the last kill for a 25-21 win, the biggest margin of any of the three sets.
Set two opened with a five-point run for LaGrange, and Oglethorpe's first points came from Panther errors and eventually an ace by Autumn Lilly. The Petrels crept their way back into the lead, especially thanks to kills from Phillips and Ella Hughes at the midway point. LaGrange seemed to have the high ground at 23-22, but a string of Panther errors plus a kill from Sims nervously gave Oglethorpe the 25-23 win.
The third and final set was the most nerve wracking of them all, with the Panthers on the Petrels' heels the whole time. Oglethorpe earned the first point but then struggled to create a decent cushion. Oglethorpe was the first to reach set point, but LaGrange matched it. After a Panther attack error, Stephens stepped up with an ace to win the set 26-24 and take home the senior day victory.
Match Two vs. Huntingdon
Eight alumni were recognized before this match started: Ellie Alfonso '24, Kaitlyn Bassett '24, Sofia Cendoya '24, Mel Davis '23, Briella Kohler '25, Anna Pinneau '24, Cate Rosenthal '24 and Kylee Zimmer '24.
Williams led with a season high of 12 kills and three aces while Higgins had 10 digs. Stephens made 10 kills and Sims had seven.
The match opened with an ace from Higgins, then a string of Hawk errors. Huntingdon struggled to make up for those errors for the rest of the set, quickly falling 25-17. Still filled with senior-day excitement, the seniors all participated in another 25-17 win in the second set. This set also featured kills from Hughes and Camdyn George.
The third and final set was quick work, as Oglethorpe won 25-14 with kills from the seniors and George again. Freshman Madison Thompson delivered the smooth final blow for the second victory of the day.
