ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels battled the Caltech Beavers in a night full of excitement Wednesday night but ended with an 82-70 loss.
Jackson Kemp made 22 points and seven rebounds, followed by Malachi Dooley with 15 points and five assists. Andrew LaVigne added 13 points and Kam Stone had eight, with both making three steals.
Dooley opened with a 3-pointer, which got a quick response from the Beavers. Caltech was an even match for most of the first half, with the lead changing five times and tying four in the first half. Dooley ended the period with a layup to put the Petrels ahead 40-38, a good reflection of the half.
Caltech began the second half with two 3-pointers, then Dooley added another of his own. The Beavers dominated most of the second half after getting a big 12-0 run early on. After that, the Petrels came within seven points of the Beavers on two separate occasions, but could not repeat the ties and gains of the first half. Caltech found another small run in the final minute, resulting in an 82-70 loss for Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe will host the Jack Berkshire Classic December 29-30. The tournament will open with the Stormy Petrels versus LaGrange Monday at 4 p.m. followed by Brevard versus Sewanee at 6 p.m. Oglethorpe will face Brevard at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. In the new year, Oglethorpe will host No. 9 Emory on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 4 p.m. before SAA play resumes January 9 at No. 15 Trinity.
