ATLANTA - Senior Malachi Dooley hit 1,000 career points as the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels beat the Baptist University of Florida Eagles 96-82 Friday night.
Dooley led with 32 points, tying his career high set earlier this season, plus two steals. Logan Turner followed with a career high 30 points, almost doubling his previous high of 17. The last time two Oglethorpe players scored over 30 points in one game was on January 17, 2020, when Dimitri Chambers and Josh Cammon earned 38 and 32 points, respectively. Dooley and Turner are now only the second pair since 2001 to do so.Â
"That was a good win," said head coach Philip Ponder after the win. "That's the best we've shot the ball all year, and it was good to see some threes falling tonight. Congratulations to Malachi on joining the 1,000-point club. Now we have a Division I exhibition game at Mercer on Sunday, then we'll have a little bit of a break for exams before our next real game."
Jackson Kemp made seven points and 11 rebounds, as Carter Watkins hit eight points and seven rebounds. Andrew LaVigne added six points and five rebounds.
The game opened with a good layup from Watkins, then a 3-pointer from Lavigne. The Eagles went tit-for-tat a majority of the first half, tying the score and even taking small leads several times. In the final four minutes Turner and Mason Kemp kicked off a 10-2 run that put the Petrels up 39-32. Oglethorpe headed into halftime up 42-34 after one of several 3-pointers by Dooley.
The Eagles got the first basket of the second half, but Dooley soon sank another 3-pointer. Oglethorpe stayed up for the rest of the game, ending with a 3-pointer by Anderson Sheperd for a 96-82 win.
