Game Recap: Baseball |

Big win helps Petrels maintain lead in Kalamazoo series

ATLANTA—Another great freshman start, this one by JB Sain, helped Oglethorpe's baseball team split a doubleheader with Kalamazoo Saturday at Hermance Stadium. The Stormy Petrels won game one 8-4 but lost game two 13-11 in extra innings, maintaining a 2-1 series lead in the four-game set.

Sain took the start in the opener and went five and one-third innings, allowing six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out three on the way to his first decision of the year, a solid win.

Sam Mills and Jonathan Cruz gave Sain the early lead on an RBI ground ball and base hit, respectively, in the second inning, and Sain kept the Petrels in the lead the rest of the way. Kalamazoo cut the lead in half with a run in the third before Aiden Hosford extended it back to three, 4-1, with a two-RBI base hit to right field in the fourth.

After a run from the Hornets in the sixth, Cooper Krause hit Oglethorpe's first dinger of the season in the seventh to make it 6-2. Trey Kinnan followed in the same inning with a two-RBI hit to make it 8-2.

Isaiah Pou hit Oglethorpe's second home run of the year in game two of the doubleheader, and it helped spark a tremendous comeback that ultimately saw the Petrels fall short. Kalamazoo led 8-0 when Pou smacked the two-run shot down the left-field line, and Oglethorpe slowly chipped away at the deficit until ultimately tying the game in the final inning.

Drew Jabaley had an RBI single in the seventh that scored Pou to make it 11-9, then two runs came across on Hornet errors to force extra innings. However, Kalamazoo pushed two runs across in the top of the eighth, and Oglethorpe stranded a runner at third with one out in the bottom half to split the doubleheader.

Game Notes

  • Brick Conway and Trey Kinnan both posted three hits in the opening game of the doubleheader. Conway went 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs. Kinnan went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI's.
  • Mason Pearcy went 2-for-4.
  • Parker Spring was the first out of the bullpen in game one. He pitched one inning allowing only one hit and no runs.
  • Charlie Boyce picked up the save in game one after going the final two and two-third innings allowing two unearned runs. He struck out three including back-to-back in the top of the ninth to help seal the win.
  • Jabaley posted a three-hit game in the nightcap, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run.
  • Krause also had two hits in game two.
