SEWANEE, Tenn. - Four Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels hit double digits as Oglethorpe defeated Southern Athletic Association leader Sewanee 103-100 Sunday evening. Oglethorpe erased a 12-point second-half deficit on the way to the win.
Dylan Pumpian led with 27 points, followed by Perry Robinson with 26, Malachi Dooley with 20, and Mason Kemp with 17. Jackson Kemp made nine rebounds while Dooley and Robinson made eight each. Robinson and M. Kemp made career high assists at seven and six, respectively.
"That was a great win today," said head coach Philip Ponder. "We battled back from 12 points down and less than eight minutes to play. We made some huge clutch plays on both ends of the court down the stretch, which is what you need to do to win these close games."
Robinson opened with a clean layup and combined with Pumpian and M. Kemp for a 6-0 lead. Oglethorpe held the lead until the Tigers reached a 23-23 tie. Sewanee struggled to truly pull forward, with the score tying four more times in a few minutes. The Petrels kept the Tigers in their place for most of the first period, but Sewanee swiped a 49-46 lead at the last second.Â
Robinson also opened the second half with a layup, but Sewanee maintained their edge. The Tigers stayed on top until the last three minutes, when a free throw from Robinson pushed the score to 90-90, then two more from Dooley put Oglethorpe on top.
M. Kemp strengthened that lead with a 3-pointer. He and Dooley then combined for a 5-0 run to hit the century mark. Sewanee tried to claw its way back, but Oglethorpe triumphed 103-100.
"I'm super proud of our guys' effort today after a tough loss Friday night," Ponder said. "We know we can beat anybody in the league, and we just want to be playing our best ball these last few weeks and make a run in the tournament."
