ATLANTA—A furious comeback that saw Oglethorpe erase an eight-run, fifth-inning deficit and take the lead with a rally in the seventh was not enough Sunday in the finale of a three-game series against No. 14 Centre. The Stormy Petrels, who at one point trailed 9-1, led 12-11 in the eighth but ultimately fell 13-12.
The series still went in favor of Oglethorpe 2-1 after the Petrels swept the series-opening doubleheader on Saturday against the nationally ranked Colonels.
Isaiah Pou had two of the biggest hits of the day. He ignited the rally with a two-out three-run homer in the fifth, making it 9-4, then in the sixth he doubled home Cooper Krause and Trey Kinnan to tie the game 9-9.
After Centre answered by retaking the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, the Petrels soared into the lead in the bottom half with RBI hits coming from Jaxson Corr, Jonathan Cruz and Trey Kinnan. Corr doubled home Brick Conway, Cruz doubled home Corr, then Kinnan singled home Cruz.
Oglethorpe was six outs away from sweeping the series, but Centre tied the game with a groundout in the eighth, what was nearly an inning-ending double play, then won it on a single in the ninth.
