Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s tennis dominates Piedmont for fifth win in last six matches

ATLANTA—Three Stormy Petrels battled back from a set down, and Oglethorpe's men's tennis team topped Piedmont 7-0 Tuesday in a match that was much closer than the final score indicated. The win was Oglethorpe's fifth in the last six matches.

After taking the doubles point with Kellen Simmons and Figge Pernfors securing the clinching match with a 7-5 win on court two, the match continued the thrilling theme when Piedmont looked in control of the singles action. The Lions won the first set at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, and No. 6 singles went back and forth until ultimately hitting a first-set tiebreak.

Sam Wasko took the Stormy Petrels to a 2-0 lead when he turned in his 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2, then Bailey Raymond made it 3-0 when he finished his 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Moments later, Noah George, who had gone to the first-set breaker, clinched the match for Oglethorpe with a 7-6, 6-3 win.

All three remaining matches that had gone Piedmont's way in the opening set finished in a third set, as Simmons, Jefferson Page and Pernfors all won second two to level their matches. In fitting fashion on the way to a dominating win, Simmons took the third set 6-4, Page took the third set 6-3, and Pernfors took the third set 6-1.

Match Notes

  • Raymond improved to 7-2 on the year to lead the team in singles wins. He is 2-0 at No. 4 and 3-0 at No. 5.

  • Page improved to 8-1 in doubles action, while Wasko improved to 7-1. Together, they moved to 7-1, which leads the team.
