Game Recap: Baseball |

Causey’s two-homer day not enough in series finale

ATLANTA—A grand slam in the second and a two-run shot in the sixth from Ryan Causey highlighted an explosive offense, but Oglethorpe's baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game Southern Athletic Association series to Sewanee 16-9 Sunday afternoon at Hermance Stadium.

Oglethorpe fell behind 3-0 on a homer in the top of the second but bounced back with seven runs to take the lead in the bottom half. It was tied 3-3 when Causey stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, and he sent a no-doubter over the left-field fence on a 0-1 pitch to make it 7-3.

Sewanee had a bounceback of its own in the third to take the lead, and that lead would remain the rest of the game.

Game Notes

  • Causey was one of five Stormy Petrels with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and six RBI's.
  • Shane Newsome also shined on offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
  • Jaxson Corr went 2-for-3 with two runs, Jonathan Cruz went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI, and Carter Drake went 2-for-4.
  • Konner Burrell and Tate Henderson combined for a perfect stretch across the last 2.1 innings, each striking out one. Burrell finished the seventh before pitching a perfect eighth, then Henderson pitched a perfect ninth.
