Petrels finish season at SAA tournament championship

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.—After posting a remarkable upset in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association tournament to advance one step away from an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, the Oglethorpe men's tennis team's run came to an end with a 4-0 loss to No. 19 Sewanee Sunday in the championship final.

The loss saw the Stormy Petrels finish the season 13-6 overall (4-2 SAA) after winning eight of their last 11 matches.

Oglethorpe came one step closer to winning the doubles point compared to the regular-season meeting, as Kellen Simmons and Figge Pernfors secured a win at No. 2 with a 6-2 victory. After that, Sewanee raced to four points with wins at No. 5, No. 2 and No. 4 singles.

Bailey Raymond and Noah George, competing at No. 3 and No. 6, both had lost their opening set but were ahead in the second, Raymond up a break and looking to be well on the way to leveling the match at a set apiece.

This marked the second time in the last five years Oglethorpe advanced to the SAA tournament final. The Petrels won it in 2021.
