BIRMINGHAM, Ala—Despite an early goal from Belhaven in just the ninth minute of action, Oglethorpe bounced back with four goals to come away with a 4-1 win Wednesday night in a neutral game at Vestavia Hills Soccer Club.
Anthony Rouse had the equalizer in the 31st minute, and Stanlee Etienne had the eventual game-winner in the 56th minute before Jackson Biggs (83rd) and Nick Krull (86th) gave the Stormy Petrels some cushion in the final minutes.
It was 1-0 Blazers midway through the first half when Rouse found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Ethan Martinez and Owen VanMarter, the reigning Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week, had assists on the play.
Twenty-five minutes later and into the second half, Etienne gave the Petrels the lead for good also with his first goal of the season. Angelo Nkosi and VanMarter had assists on this goal.
Biggs and Krull finished off the game with their second goals of the season with assists coming from VanMarter and Rouse, then Biggs and Luca Orsi.
The win improved Oglethorpe to 3-2-1 on the young season.
Match Notes
- Oglethorpe and Belhaven both took 14 shots, although the Petrels had the advantage on shots on goal at 6-5.
- VanMarter's three assists in the game was one off the Oglethorpe record and matched what only 11 other Stormy Petrels have been able to do in the NCAA-era history of the program.
- VanMarter is now up to 13 points on the season with four goals and five assists. Ten other Petrels have contributed on scoring plays this season.
- This marked Oglethorpe' second time facing Belhaven in program history. The first meeting came last season on the campus of Emory and resulted in a scoreless draw.
