Volleyball bounces back in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels went two for three this weekend after defeating both Warren Wilson and Berea 3-0 on Saturday.

Game one vs. Warren Wilson

Alise Mayers led with 12 kills and eight digs, followed by Abby Wheeler with 15 digs and two service aces. Ella Hughes made four blocks and Aubrey Hill made seven kills. 

The Owls earned the first two points of the game, then Hughes put the Petrels on the board. The first set was pretty neck-and-neck, with Warren Wilson even gaining a small lead towards the end. Hill kicked off a string of kills including Mayers, Hughes, Morgan Phillips to win the set 25-22.

The second set began in a similar fashion, but Oglethorpe took the big lead much earlier this time as Hughes, Hill and Phillips combined once again. In part by several errors from the Owls, set two was a quick and easy 25-15 win.  

Oglethorpe dominated the third and final set, with a final ace from Isabelle Zwirn securing a 25-10 win for the game sweep. 

Match two vs. Berea

Graci Sims made 11 kills, Mayers had 13 digs, and Autumn Lilly made 25 assists. 

Sims made the first kill of the game, but Berea responded with three of their own. Set one was neck-and-neck, until Hughes and Camdyn George made kills for the 25-22 win.

Oglethorpe dominated the second set with Hughes, Hill and Sims combining kills for lead that would last until the 25-17 end. 

Berea fought back in the third set, but the Petrels still amassed a stable lead. Phillips made the final kill to end the set 25-21.

Match Notes

  • Warren Wilson made zero blocks. 
  • Morgan Phillips set a career high of five kills during the Warren Wilson match. She also made her first dig of the season in the Berea match.
  • Toki Ingram made her collegiate debut and got one kill against Warren Wilson.
  • Lilly has now made 300 assists this season and over 1,200 in her career.

Up Next

The Stormy Petrels will host their home and Southern Athletic Association opener on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. against Millsaps as Oglethorpe hosts their own round-robin conference matchups featuring Southwestern and Sewanee.
