Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Story by Abby Wheeler

Petrels stunned by Vikings

ROME, Ga.- The Oglethorpe women's basketball team was defeated 71-49 by Berry College this Friday on the road in the Cage Center.

Despite previously beating the Vikings 48-44 at home on December 3, the Petrels could not get the job done on the road. Keimarya Rivera led the box score with 14 points and nine rebounds. Malia Melton followed with 13 points and two steals. Marlie Battle spearheaded the defensive effort with five steals and four defensive rebounds. Sheraton Foster tallied eight points, two rebounds and one steal.

The Petrels were the first on the scoreboard with a 6-0 run made possible by Battle and Melton in the first four minutes of regulation. This early lead was soon minimized as the Vikings got settled from range. A layup from Foster made the score 28-19 going into the second half after a chippy and aggressive start to this Southern Athletic Association rivalry game.

Anna Conza opened the second half with a 3-pointer assisted by Battle. Rivera and Melton attempted to close the gap by working in the paint and were able to reduce a 12-point lead to a seven-point lead.

In response, the Vikings found a second offensive wind and ran away with possession pushing the score to 52-39. Late points from Foster to help were not enough as the Petrels ran out of time to recover such a large deficit ending the game in a bleak 5-0 run. An uncharacteristic second-half finish from the Petrels led to a snap in their three-game winning streak and a 71-49 loss.
