Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Story by Abby Wheeler

Lewis scores last-minute penalty for Petrels victory

ATLANTA- The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team picked up its first Southern Athletic Association win Sunday evening in pouring rain versus Centre College, 1-0, at home.

Goalkeeper Sebastian Lewis scored the only goal of the game as a penalty, late in the second half, to secure the 1-0 victory. He also posted his third shutout of the season with six saves.

The game opened with back-and-forth possessions. Nick Krull, Kenny Griffin and Angelo Nkosi took the only three shots of the half. The Colonels only took one shot.

Oglethorpe entered the second half with fire and was ready to score. Ethan Martinez took a shot on goal to the right in the 48th minute but it was recovered by Centre goalkeeper Declan Miller. After a foul on Centre, the Petrels were awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Luca Orsi stepped in to take the shot, and nearly scored, but it was contained by a great save from Miller.

A 30-minute lightning delay and a few minutes more off the clock later, Centre committed another foul in the box, giving Oglethorpe another chance to take the lead. This time, Lewis was at the mark and in the pouring rain sent the ball blazing past Miller into the corner of the net to put the Petrels on the board in the 86th minute.

This swayed the momentum completely, and the Colonels ran out of time to equalize giving the Petrels their first SAA win of the season.

Match Notes
