Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Story by Abby Wheeler

Men’s soccer season ends after penalty shootout in SAA tournament

ATLANTA- The Oglethorpe men's soccer team fell to Berry College in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association tournament after pushing the Vikings to double overtime and a penalty shootout Thursday evening.

Nathan Leveque was the lone goal scorer, and Sebastian Lewis tallied five saves. Eleven Petrels recorded shots, with Lewis and Nick Krull both making their penalty shots.

The first half of regulation was equal on both sides, the Petrels taking four shots and Lewis picking up two saves. The Vikings turned the heat up in the second half, taking 12 shots to Petrels' four.

The back and forth start to the game came to a sudden halt in the 87th minute when Sam Carlson scored to put the Vikings on the board 1-0 after a throw-in was moved forward by a header and tapped in.

Leveque returned the favor a minute later after redirecting a through ball to the right side of the goal to equalize and force the Vikings to overtime.

Brice Screws took a shot in the first overtime but could not pull the Petrels ahead. The Petrel defense kept the Vikings smothered in the second overtime period and forced them to decide the outcome in a penalty shootout.

The first shot of the shootout was nearly saved by Lewis but slipped just by his glove. Krull was up next at the hash and delivered after beating the Vikings' goalkeeper to the right of the goal.

Carlson of the Vikings put them up 2-1 after a shot just under the crossbar. Lewis equalized it after pounding the ball to the bottom right of the goal.

The Vikings improved the score to 3-2 before a couple of Petrel misses sealed the game.
