ROME, Ga. - The Oglethorpe men's tennis team opened their slate of spring matches with a 5-2 victory over Shorter University Monday afternoon in Rome, Georgia.
Men's Results
- Kellen Simmons started off the season strong with a comeback victory. After losing his first set in a tiebreak, Simmons fought back to win the next set 6-0 and the next 6-4.
- Simmons' match put the Petrels up 3-1, and Noah George clinched the fourth point moments later after defeating his opponent 6-2 and 6-4.
- Another singles point came from Bailey Raymond, who showed a tough game play after handing his opponent a 6-3, 6-3 loss.
- Oglethorpe's final point to clinch the victory rolled in after Sam Wasko's 6-4, 6-3 win.
- In doubles to start the day, Jefferson Page and Wasko got the doubles matchups started with a swift 6-1 victory. Simmons and Figge Pernfors combined for an additional 6-1 win.
- The final doubles matchup featured Zack Raymond and Callum Searle who had to battle out a tough 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak to seal the victory.
Women's Results
- The women showed great fight in the first match of the spring. Nicole Sanchez at No. 4 singles narrowly lost her first set 6-4 but could not recover the second to win her match.
- Grace Elsevier had the next closest match in singles but also lost in straight sets.

Oglethorpe will travel to Samford, Alabama, to face Samford University this Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. ET and the women will travel next Thursday, Feb. 19, to play Piedmont College in Demorest at 3 p.m.
