ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels fell 90-81 in overtime to the Southwestern Pirates after a stressful farewell to home court on Sunday.
Carter Watkins led with 19 points and six rebounds, followed by Malachi Dooley and Mason Kemp with 12 points each. Jackson Kemp posted 11 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, plus four steals. Kam Stone also put up 11 points.
Southwestern sank a 3-pointer to get things going, which was quickly mirrored by J. Kemp. Oglethorpe's biggest run was a 12-2 campaign toward the end of the period, featuring Watkins, J. Kemp and Anderson Shepherd. This took the Petrels from a seven-point deficit to a 32-32 tie. The Pirates pulled ahead two more times, but the Kemp twins tied things up each time. After six ties in the first period, the Petrels headed into halftime at 36-36.
M. Kemp fired off back-to-back threes as the Petrels took the lead for the first six minutes of the second period. The Pirates briefly controlled the court during the middle of the half, but the Petrels found an 8-3 run to take back the lead. This back-and-forth continued until the very end of the period, when it seemed Oglethorpe was going to take a 74-72 win. The Pirates scored in the last 30 seconds to push the game into overtime.
LaVigne made a layup early in OT, but the Pirates followed soon enough. LaVigne kept the Petrels in the lead with two good free throws, but Southwestern ultimately barreled ahead. In the final two minutes the Pirates went on a 13-3 run, which handed them the 90-81 final score.
