Petrels defeat Brevard at home in first win of season

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University earned a striking 13–4 victory over Brevard College in their third home game of the season Saturday afternoon.

On the offensive side, Noah Stroud led the way with four goals and one assist. Gannon Johnson added two goals and three assists, while Liam Miller and Aniedo Udoh each scored twice. Jax Cuni, Henry Adams and Peyton Knowles each found the back of the net as the Petrels totaled 13 goals on the afternoon.

At faceoff, Gabe Hunter went 12-of-20 at the X, helping Oglethorpe control possession throughout the contest.

In goal, Wyatt Desaussure got the start and recorded five saves while allowing three goals in the opening half. Ian Wood entered in relief and finished with seven saves while surrendering just one goal over the final 30 minutes. Defensively, Jerald Spoto caused three turnovers, while Johnson added three caused turnovers and four ground balls to anchor the field effort.

Oglethorpe opened the game with strong offensive pressure, taking a 2–0 lead behind goals from Stroud, assisted by Cuni, and Johnson. Brevard responded with a pair of quick goals to tie the game, but the Petrels regained momentum in the second quarter.

The second period proved decisive. Goals from Adams and Stroud, both assisted by Johnson, sparked a 4–1 run. Udoh and Knowles each added late-quarter goals to send Oglethorpe into halftime with a 6–3 advantage.

Oglethorpe continued to build in the third quarter as Cuni finished off a feed from Adams, and Johnson added a goal with an assist from Knowles. After Brevard cut into the deficit, the Petrels responded with a dominant fourth quarter. Stroud scored twice in the period, Miller netted two, including an extra-man goal, and Udoh added another as Oglethorpe pulled away for the 13–4 victory.

Game Notes

  • This was interim head coach Jibril Stapleton's first win with Oglethorpe.
  • Oglethorpe's record against Brevard is now 5-0, as they have never lost a matchup in program history.
  • Oglethorpe outshot Brevard 61–30 and held a 26–16 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Petrels were efficient in clears, finishing 26-of-28 (92.9%).
  • Oglethorpe won the ground ball battle 46–34.
  • Oglethorpe capitalized on its lone extra-man opportunity (1-for-1) while holding Brevard scoreless on three chances.
