Oglethorpe faces narrow loss at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels put up a tough fight against the Methodist Monarchs Saturday afternoon but fell 13-12 at the very end.

Mariah Butler led with four goals and two assists. Anna Ramsden followed with three goals and five draw controls, then Savannah Freeman and Ellis Mitchum had four ground balls each.

Mitchum scored right out of the gate, then Methodist put up two goals of their own during the first quarter. The Monarchs went on to dominate the second period, scoring three goals before Adesewa Atiba made her first collegiate goal. Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter, with two from Ramsden and one from Butler.

Although the Monarchs were the clear leaders for most of the game, the Petrels shook things up in the fourth quarter. Jersey Cuni scored first, followed by two goals from Methodist. Then the Monarchs let their guard down, and Oglethorpe scored five goals in a row: Butler, Ramsden, Sarah Liang, Butler again, and then Freeman.

The 11-11 tie held for about a minute, and with just five minutes left in the game, it seemed the results could fall either way. However, Methodist regained their footing and made two more goals. Butler made the final goal of the game, but it wasn't enough as the Petrels fell 13-12.
