SEWANEE, Tenn.- The Oglethorpe women's basketball team secured a 60-57 road victory over Sewanee this Friday in Juhan Gymnasium in Sewanee, Tennessee.
Close scores in the first three quarters made it look as if the Petrels would run out of time. A crucial run late in the second half propelled the Petrels to overtake the Tigers, as Oglethorpe scored 19 of the last 22 points to claim the victory.
Keimarya Rivera led the box score tallying 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Marlie Battle followed with 15 points and five steals. Briley Elder recorded 12 points and shot 4-of-7 from the 3-point line.
Rivera put the Petrels on the board first and assisted Battle in an early 5-0 run. Sewanee slowly creeped back and made the lead as wide as five points. A 3-pointer from Elder swung momentum back to Oglethorpe and tied the score back. Oglethorpe ended the half trailing 30-28.
Oglethorpe was slow to start coming out of halftime and trailed eight points with 11 minutes left in the game. Rivera, Battle, Elder and Sheraton Foster went on a 19-8 run to put the Petrels at a substantial lead and close off any hopes of a comeback for the Tigers. Elder made two 3-point shots in about one minute of regulation that helped clinch the lead. Despite the score tying three times and seeming out of Oglethorpe's reach, the Petrels persevered and picked up their fifth Southern Athletic Association win of the season.
