ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe University baseball team capped off a dominant weekend by sweeping Greensboro College in a three-game series, earning an 8-7 comeback victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader before securing a 6-3 win in game two. With the pair of wins, the Stormy Petrels completed the series sweep in impressive fashion.
Game One: Oglethorpe 8, Greensboro 7
Oglethorpe jumped out early in the opener, capitalizing on three Greensboro errors in the bottom of the first inning. Cade Eidam reached to start the rally, and Ryan Causey later came around to score as the Petrels plated three unearned runs. Trey Kinnan drove in a run after reaching on an error, and Maddox Husband added an RBI groundout to give Oglethorpe a 3-0 advantage.
Greensboro responded with a two-run homer in the second inning and eventually surged ahead with a three-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Despite the setback, the Petrels remained composed heading into the late innings.
The defining moment came in the bottom of the eighth. Trailing 7-4, Oglethorpe pieced together a disciplined rally. Husband doubled to spark the inning, and Nick Morgan singled to put runners in scoring position. Jack Perno drove in a run on a groundout to cut the deficit to two. Trey Kinnan followed with an RBI walk, and Kaden Stephenson drew another bases-loaded walk to tie the game. With the bases still full, Drew Jabaley was hit by a pitch, forcing in the go-ahead run and completing the four-run comeback.
On the mound, Grant Guinther and Tyler Hower combined to secure the final outs, with Hower stranding three runners in the ninth to preserve the 8-7 victory.
Game Two: Oglethorpe 6, Greensboro 3
In the second game, Oglethorpe wasted no time taking control. Cade Eidam singled and stole second to ignite a three-run first inning. Ryan Causey drew a walk and advanced on a wild pitch before Kaden Stephenson reached on an error that allowed both Eidam and Causey to score. Perno added a sacrifice fly to extend the early lead to 3-0.
The Petrels' pitching staff kept Greensboro quiet through five innings before the Pride narrowed the score to 3-2 in the sixth. Freshman right-hander Micah Knox entered in relief to steady the game.
Oglethorpe delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the seventh. Kinnan singled to set the table for Stephenson, who launched a three-run home run to right center, scoring Kinnan and Causey and pushing the lead to 6-2.
Greensboro managed one run in the eighth, but Hower closed the door in the ninth to secure the 6-3 win and finalize the doubleheader sweep.
