Oglethorpe battles but falls short to Alfred State at home

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University hosted Alfred State College Friday night, falling 17–11 in a competitive home matchup.

On the offensive side, Gannon Johnson delivered a standout performance, finishing with five goals and three assists. Peyton Knowles also had a strong outing, recording three goals while consistently generating offensive pressure. Matthew Wilson and Henry Adams each added a goal to round out Oglethorpe's scoring on the afternoon.

At faceoff, Gabe Hunter played a key role in controlling possession for the Petrels. Hunter won 18 of 32 faceoffs while collecting a team-high 15 ground balls, helping Oglethorpe maintain opportunities on offense throughout the game.

In goal, Wyatt Desaussure played the full contest and recorded 18 saves, making several key stops to keep Oglethorpe within striking distance during stretches of the game.

Defensively, Charles Caskey led the Petrels with two caused turnovers, while Daniel Carpenter, Alexander Martelo Reyes and Hunter each added one to disrupt Alfred State's offensive rhythm. Jerald Spoto also contributed four ground balls, helping the Petrels regain possession during several key defensive sequences.

Oglethorpe opened the game with strong offensive energy, highlighted by an early goal from Johnson and another from Knowles off an assist from Johnson. The Petrels matched Alfred State early as both teams traded possessions and opportunities in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Oglethorpe find momentum offensively. Wilson connected on a goal off a Johnson assist, while Knowles and Johnson each added scores to keep the Petrels within reach heading into halftime.

After the break, the Petrels surged offensively. Johnson scored multiple goals in the third quarter, including one assisted by Hunter, while Knowles added another score as Oglethorpe worked to close the gap.

In the fourth quarter, Oglethorpe continued to push offensively, highlighted by a late goal from Adams. Despite sustained pressure and several saves from Desaussure, Alfred State maintained its lead down the stretch as the Petrels ultimately fell 17–11.
