Baseball rallies late but falls at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.— The Oglethorpe University baseball team dropped a 9-4 contest on the road to Piedmont University Tuesday night, mounting a late push but unable to overcome an early deficit.

Piedmont set the tone early, scoring four runs in the first inning to take immediate control. Oglethorpe answered in the second inning, capitalizing on traffic on the bases. Ethan Snipes drove in Brick Conway on a fielder's choice to put the Petrels on the board, but the team left the bases loaded, limiting the rally to a single run.

The Petrels continued to create opportunities throughout the game, finishing with nine hits and four walks, but stranded 10 runners on base. Trey Kinnan led the offense with two hits, including an RBI double in the seventh inning that scored Aiden Hosford.

Out of the bullpen, Josh Stewart provided a strong outing, tossing three innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out one. Alex Kerr followed with a scoreless inning, helping keep Oglethorpe within striking distance late.

Trailing 9-2 entering the ninth, the Petrels made things interesting. With two out, Oglethorpe strung together four hits, highlighted by a two-run home run from Maddox Husband that scored Hosford. Ben Chatham and Evan Smallwood added hits in the inning as the Petrels cut into the deficit, but the comeback effort fell short.

Will Weaver reached base multiple times and added a hit, while Ethan Snipes and Maddox Husband each recorded RBIs in the loss.
