Petrels power past Rhodes with 14-run outburst to close series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Oglethorpe University baseball team closed out its weekend series against Rhodes College with an electric offensive performance, defeating the Lynx 14–8 on Sunday afternoon. The Stormy Petrels bounced back after dropping the first two games of the series (9–1, 7–6), showcasing resilience and firepower to salvage the finale in convincing fashion.

Oglethorpe came out swinging in the top of the first inning, plating three runs to take an early lead. Cade Eidam ignited the rally with a leadoff hit and later came around to score, while Trey Kinnan and Ryan Causey each drove in runs as the Petrels capitalized on patient at-bats and early opportunities.

Rhodes responded with a strong showing in the early innings, putting up four runs to gain the lead and briefly seize momentum. However, Oglethorpe refused to back down, answering in the third inning when Brick Conway launched a game-tying home run to even the score at 4–4.

The Petrels continued to chip away in the fourth inning, regaining the lead behind an RBI single from Conway. Oglethorpe then created separation in the fifth, pushing across three runs highlighted by RBI hits from Kinnan and Evan Smallwood, along with a productive groundout from Eidam.

In the sixth inning, Oglethorpe delivered the decisive blow, erupting four runs to extend the lead to 12–5. Aiden Hosford ripped an RBI double, Ethan Snipes followed with an RBI single, and Jace Armstrong contributed during a rally that took advantage of Rhodes defensive miscues and timely execution.

The Petrels continued to apply pressure late into the game, adding an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Kinnan before Conway capped the scoring with his second home run of the day in the ninth inning.

The pitching staff settled in after a challenging start. Hunter Lovett led the way with five strong innings of relief, allowing just one run while striking out two to earn the win. Will Lumpkin and Paul Gaeta combined to close out the final frames, with Gaeta recording two strikeouts over the last two innings.

Oglethorpe finished with 14 runs on 15 hits and played clean defense with zero errors, while taking advantage of three Rhodes errors throughout the contest.

Offensively, Conway powered the lineup with a standout performance, going 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs. Nick Morgan added four hits and four RBIs of his own, while Hosford tallied three hits, including two doubles. Snipes contributed two hits and two RBIs, and Kinnan finished with three RBIs as part of a balanced offensive effort.
