ROME, Ga. – The Oglethorpe University baseball team opened Southern Athletic Association tournament play Thursday afternoon with a competitive battle against Centre College, losing 5-3. Despite the result, the Stormy Petrels remained alive in the double-elimination tournament and will face Sewanee Friday morning.
Senior Cade Eidam paced the Petrel offense with a standout performance, finishing 2-for-5 with a double, triple and all three RBIs.
Oglethorpe broke through in the fourth inning after Jace Armstrong reached on an error and Nick Morgan worked a walk. Eidam then cleared the bases with a triple down the right-field line to give the Petrels a 2-0 lead.
Centre answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Petrels extended their advantage again in the sixth. Ben Chatham singled to start the frame before Eidam delivered once more, driving an RBI double down the left-field line to make it 3-1.
Centre responded with two runs in the sixth before taking the lead in the seventh. The Colonels added an insurance run in the eighth, but Oglethorpe continued to battle late into the afternoon.
The Petrels finished with eight hits as Chatham added a multihit performance, while Trey Kinnan, Ryan Causey, Aiden Hosford and Morgan each recorded hits of their own.
On the mound, Tyler Hower gave Oglethorpe a strong outing, allowing three earned runs across six innings of work. Parker Spring added a scoreless relief inning, and Micah Knox recorded the final two outs in the eighth.
