GREENSBORO, N.C.—Senior Ryan Dunn battled near the top of the individual leaderboard, ultimately landing fifth overall, and the No. 12 Oglethorpe men's golf team opened the spring regular season with an eighth-place finish at the elite Gate City Invitational on Tuesday. The event took place Monday and Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club.
Dunn shot 70-71-73 for a 2 under par effort across the 54 holes. After Monday's first two rounds, he was only two strokes off the lead in the runner-up spot and leading Oglethorpe to seventh overall.
Barton Abstein (74-72-77) finished 36th overall, Jackson Hiller (79-74-72) 46th overall, and Jake MacDonald (77-76-77) and Ryan Callaham (80-75-75) both took 63rd, Callaham competing as an individual.
As a team, the Stormy Petrels made the biggest improvement from round one to round two after firing two strokes better at 293 in the middle round.
The field featured several other teams in the national top 25, including No. 2 Huntingdon, No. 5 Methodist, No. 9 Kenyon, No. 16 Transylvania, No. 20 Babson, No. 21 Lynchburg and No. 22 Guilford. Rhodes and Berry from the Southern Athletic Association were also in attendance, with Rhodes finishing two strokes ahead and Berry finishing nine strokes behind.
Tournament Notes
- Oglethorpe ranked eighth in both par 4 and par 5 scoring.
- The team also was fourth overall in total pars with 175.
- Dunn ranked third in par 5 scoring at 6 under.
