ATLANTA—A late spark in the form of Myleigh Oglesby's second goal of the season gave the Oglethorpe women's soccer team a fighting chance in the closing stretch, but in the end the Stormy Petrels fell 3-1 to visiting Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon at home.
It marked the first loss of the season for Oglethorpe, which moved to 2-1-1 on the year.
CNU, which ranked No. 25 nationally in the preseason coaches poll, got on the board in the 22nd minute, but Oglethorpe managed to keep the deficit only one through the end of the first half and well into the second half. It was not until a bit of bad luck on a deflection that the Captains doubled the lead in the 63rd minute and looked to be well in control of the match with only 20 minutes remaining.
That changed when Oglesby capitalized on a deflection of her own to bring the game back to 2-1 and re-energize the Petrels in the 74th minute. However, 10 minutes later the Captains went back ahead by two with a goal from Ellie Diehl that capped the scoring and secured the 3-1 result.
