Rus Rainey joined Oglethorpe in 2024 after decades of coaching experience.
Prior to Oglethorpe
Rainey was a high school teacher and coach for 32 years. Over that period of time, he was the Head Boys Golf Coach at Etowah High School, Head Boys & Girls Golf Coach at Marietta High School, Head Boys & Girls Golf Coach at East Paulding High School, and Head Boys Golf Coach at North Cobb High School. He also coached Varsity Football all 32 years.
He served as Vice President and President of the Georgia High School Golf Coaches Association (GHSGCA), State Golf Chairman for the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA), and on the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Golf Advisory Committee. He was Tournament Director for countless Region and Area Tournaments for both Boys & Girls Golf. He was also a Tournament Director for the Atlanta Junior Golf Association.

Rainey originally hails from Kennesaw, Georgia, where he attended North Cobb High School and played football and golf for 4 years. He received the “Larry Nelson Award” for outstanding golfer and the Rory Lynn Memorial Athletic Scholarship his senior year.
He played football at West Georgia College (now University of West Georgia) and graduated from Georgia State University.
Rainey currently resides in Acworth, Georgia, with his wife Lori, who is also a North Cobb alumnus. They have two grown sons, Robbie and Weslee, who both graduated from North Cobb as well.
