Remainder of NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship canceled, along with all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships

The NCAA announced the cancelation of all winter and spring championships Thursday, including the remainder of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The Stormy Petrels were scheduled to take on Whitman in the tournament's sectional round Friday evening from Brunswick, Maine.

The organization released the following statement late Thursday afternoon:

"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

The Petrels see their season draw to an unfortunate close, but they'll go down as one of the best teams in program history. They accumulated a 29-1 overall record, the best in terms of wins and winning percentage in program annals. They went undefeated through SAA play, going a perfect 14-0 in the conference and sweeping to their second SAA championship in three years, both in terms of tournament and regular-season play. Finally, they advanced to the sectionals of the NCAA tournament for just the third time in program history, and the first since 2009.
