Box Score ATLANTA – Oglethorpe scored the first 21 points of the second half to run away with a 73-58 win over Huntingdon Friday night in the second game of the Petrels' Holiday Classic. Amy Vazquez led all scorers with 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, and seven other Stormy Petrels entered the scoring column in the win.
Vazquez was especially sharp from the perimeter, finishing 4-for-6 from three, and added five rebounds, one block and one steal.
Other Petrels in the scoring column included Carley Bell with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Ellie Ronan with a career high 12 points alongside nine rebounds. Jessamy Gaetanos finished close behind with nine points, including a 2-for-5 effort from behind the arc.
"We really wanted to focus on the rebounding after a tough performance against Berry a couple weeks back," said Head Coach Alex Richey. "I thought the team played well in the second half and got some good quality shots which lifted our confidence. We also did enough on the defensive end, and we are seeing a lot of improvement on that side of the floor which we hope to carry over into conference play."
The rebounding effort was certainly one of the high points for Oglethorpe, which outrebounded Huntingdon by a margin of 14 (50-36). This included 39-27 on the defensive end, and it was a group rebounding effort as well. Ten Petrels earned at least one rebound, and six earned five or more. Ronan and Bell's nine and eight, respectively, led the team.
The Petrels also forced 18 turnovers from the Hawks and blocked two shots.
The defensive effort was most apparent coming out of the gates of the second half. Trailing 32-29 at the break, the Petrels held the Hawks scoreless for the first 6:49 during which time they went into a lead of 50-32. Five Petrels accounted for scoring during the 21-0 run, and the run started with a tying three from Vazquez followed shortly by a go-ahead three from Bell.
Bell's three at the 8:47 mark of the third quarter put Oglethorpe into the lead for good.
Oglethorpe led by 10 at the end of the third quarter and saw Huntingdon trim the lead only as close as six, which came in the final four minutes of the game. Gaetanos answered the Hawk's close effort with a 3-pointer at the 3:30 mark to put the Petrels back out to a solid cushion, in fact starting a 14-5 run the Petrels would use to finish the game.
Up next, Oglethorpe plays again Saturday against Southern Virginia back here at Dorough Field House at 4 p.m. Southern Virginia topped Southern Athletic Association member Centre earlier Friday, 73-63.
