JACKSON, Miss. -- The Oglethorpe men's basketball team started the game off strong and kept the heat on the Millsaps Majors until the end, with an 82-59 win.
Oglethorpe was led by
Dimetri Chambers, this week's SAA Player of the Week, scoring 24 points,
Will Koch scoring 14, and
Jack Murrah with 10. This marked Chambers' 35th career game scoring 20 or more.
"I loved our energy tonight," said Head Coach
Philip Ponder. "We did not finish the first half well, but other than the last five minutes of the first half, I thought we played really well. All road wins are big, so we will enjoy this tonight and start focusing on Birmingham Southern tomorrow."
The Stormy Petrels started the first half strong, with Koch making a jump shot just 30 seconds in. After the Majors caught up, Oglethorpe bounded ahead with a 23-5 run. Even after that run, the Petrels continued to dominate the court as Millsaps struggled to keep up. The first half ended with the Petrels ahead at 44-35.
The second half of the game saw Oglethorpe dominate again. Both teams went back and forth scoring, but the Petrels were able to keep the Majors at bay. Even though the last four minutes of the game saw each team gain six points, the Petrels were too far ahead for Millsaps as the game ended 82-59.
This is SAA win number four in Oglethorpe's latest winning streak, putting them at a league-best 5-1 for SAA games and 11-5 overall.
Oglethorpe's next game is Sunday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. at Birmingham Southern.
