ATLANTA -- After an eventful game against the Birmingham Southern Panthers, the second half proved too much for Oglethorpe as the Petrels ultimately fell short with a final score of 97-89.
The Stormy Petrels had 12 players in the scoring column, three of whom made double digits. Freshman
Ellie Ronan led the team with a career high of 21 points,
Sydni Donovan with 14, and
Emma Perna with a career high of 11.
The Petrels started out strong in the first quarter, earning five points before the Panthers had a chance to score. Oglethorpe stayed on top until the final two minutes, when Birmingham Southern pulled ahead and stayed there.
Heading into the second quarter just behind the Panthers with a score of 24-23, the Petrels quickly caught up as the score was tied 27-27 with 7:07 on the clock. It was at this point Birmingham Southern took off into a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
The third quarter started with the two teams just five points apart, but Birmingham Southern maintained their lead. The Panthers went on a 6-1 run that put them 11 points ahead of the Petrels, then ended the quarter at 73-61.
The fourth quarter reflected the third, as the Petrels fought to catch up with the Panthers. But Birmingham Southern kept their distance, and ended the game nearly 10 points ahead at 97-89.
The next women's basketball game will be at home on Friday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. against Hendrix.
