Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Chloe Clemensen

Women’s soccer falls to Sewanee despite strong defense

ATLANTA - After a considerable display of defense, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels ultimately fell to the Sewanee Tigers 1-0 in their Title IX anniversary observance match.

The Petrels and the Tigers struggled back and forth to gain control of the field early on, but Sewanee's first shot after three minutes of play sent the Tigers on a streak. Sewanee took six shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, two of which were saved by goalkeeper Haley Lowell. After numerous attempts, the Tigers made their first and only goal of the game nearly 20 minutes into the period.

Julia Snyder had one of the Petrels' best chances to take the lead just before Sewanee's goal and Kirsten Wrona later in the period had a great chance to equalize, but both attempts came up empty. The Tigers took 15 shots in the first period, with Lowell recording five saves.

After the break, Sewanee wasted no time getting back to testing Oglethorpe's defense. Early on, the Tigers took three shots in a span of just 45 seconds. One was blocked, the second saved by Lowell, and the third went wide. Sewanee continued to push Lowell and the rest of Oglethorpe's defense, as the Tigers totaled 18 shots for the second period. Lowell made six saves in the second half for a game total of 11.

Senior Kirsten Brown had a chance to equalize for Oglethorpe late in the game, but it was saved by Sewanee goalkeeper Leah Atkins. Even though the Petrels were able to keep Sewanee from scoring again, Oglethorpe could not find an opportunity to tie things up and dropped the home game 1-0 to the Tigers.
