MEMPHIS, Tenn. --
Ellie Alfonso tallied 13 kills and 12 digs and recorded service aces on the last two points to send Oglethorpe to a 3-0 sweep of Rhodes Saturday afternoon in a Southern Athletic Association match. Oglethorpe won 25-18, 25-19, 26-24.
Oglethorpe saw the most resistance in the third set and trailed it 20-16 before a kill by
Jackie Schner then back-to-back kills from Alfonso and a service ace by
Legacy Guider made the score 21-20. Five points later, Rhodes looked poised to win the third set with a 24-22 lead, but two errors tied the match at 24-24 then Alfonso delivered service aces on the last two points to send Oglethorpe to the three-set victory.
Six Stormy Petrels made their way into the kill column. After Alfonso,
Cate Rosenthal had eight and Schner had five.
Gabbi Phillips had 24 assists, and
Sofia Cendoya, the reigning SAA defensive player of the week, had 15 digs to lead both teams.
Up next, Oglethorpe faces Hendrix on the road Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home for the next three matches all next week.Â
