Oglethorpe earns a point in 2-2 thriller against Berry

ROME, Ga. -- The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels earned a point on Saturday afternoon against Berry in a 2-2 draw in the final match of the regular season.

Oglethorpe's season trend of conceding the opening goal continued as a giveaway led to Jensen Brown scoring in the 10th minute to give Berry the lead. The men's soccer team could not respond in the first half as they only had one shot on target.

However, John Akin's side had a dramatically better performance in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Kyle Butcher scored to bring the Petrels back into the match. It was the freshman's first collegiate goal.

Eighteen minutes later, Oglethorpe found themselves behind once again as Berry was given a penalty in the 70th minute. Nathan Carlson calmly put it into the back of the net as Ethan Harrison went in the opposite direction, giving Berry the lead once again.

There would be incredible testament from the Oglethorpe men as they did not drop their heads. In the 74th minute, Tuli Mwarumba scored an audacious backheel goal to rescue a point for his side after a brilliant cross from Javier Martinez. It was the senior's third goal of the season. Just two minutes later, Oglethorpe could have changed their fortunes by scoring a winning goal as a shot from Javier Aponte hit the crossbar.

Match Notes:

  • Oglethorpe finished fifth in the SAA men's soccer standings after this final match of the season.
  • The Petrels outshot Berry 17-8 but were outshot 6-4 on shots on goal.
  • Oglethorpe's record is now 5-5-5.
