ATLANTA – Oglethorpe sophomore Gabbi Phillips set the school record for assists in a match for the second time in just as many games after recording 57 assists against Sewanee Saturday afternoon in a 3-1 Oglethorpe win. The Stormy Petrels as a team also shattered the school record for kills in a four-set match with 68 kills.
The Petrels moved to 2-0 against the Tigers of Sewanee this season after a three sets to one road win at Sewanee in September. This also marked Oglethorpe's second straight Southern Athletic Association victory after Friday's thrilling five-set win over Centre.
The first two sets of the match featured the closest competition. Oglethorpe pushed past Sewanee in the first set 26-24 to take the early 1-0 lead, but the Tigers responded with a 25-23 victory in the second set bringing the match to 1-1. After trailing 5-2 in the beginning of the third set, the Petrels went on an 8-1 run and took all of the momentum with them.
Oglethorpe would go on another run to bring the score to 20-10 over the Tigers before winning the third set 25-15. A kill from senior Jackie Schner assisted by Phillips would end the fourth and final set by a margin of 25-19 securing the 3-1 win for the Stormy Petrels.
In only two sets played, freshman Ashlynn Stephens was able to record a new career-high 12 kills, while Schner and Alfonso added 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Stephens entered the match in the third set and provided a huge spark to the Oglethorpe offense with seven kills and only one error in the third set alone.
Four other Petrels contributed to the kill column to break the school record for kills in a four-set match. Juniors Ellie Alfonso and Sofia Cendoya added three and two service aces, responsible for five of the team's nine in total.
On the defensive side of the net, Oglethorpe recorded 80 digs led by Cendoya with 30 and Schner with 19. Half of the Petrels' eight blocks were awarded to senior Emelia Sengstock with four blocks on the match followed by Alfonso's two.
