Petrels claim first victory over Birmingham Southern in program history

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a close match that ended 1-0, Oglethorpe's women's soccer team recorded their first program win against Southern Athletic Association rival Birmingham Southern College. Sophomore Mackenzie Jones scored the lone goal of the game in the 71st minute.

Historically, the Petrels have taken some hard hits from the Panthers, and the first period of Sunday's game seemed to be headed in the same direction, as Birmingham Southern was able to take their first shot just a minute into the game. But the Petrels put up a fight as both teams took two shots in the first half. Senior Kirsten Brown took Oglethorpe's first shot of the game, but it was saved by Birmingham Southern goalkeeper Mary Claire Henry. Goalkeeper Haley Lowell saved the Panthers' one shot on goal for the period.

Birmingham Southern fired off two shots as the second period began, one of which was saved by Lowell, and the other was wide. These would be the final two shots of the game for Birmingham Southern. Over 20 minutes after the Panthers' final shot, Jones scored the sole goal of the game, sending Oglethorpe to a 1-0 victory.

Overall, Oglethorpe took four shots and Birmingham Southern took five. Lowell made three saves while Henry recorded two.
