ATLANTA – Oglethorpe kept Warren Wilson off the scoreboard for the first four minutes and 15 seconds on the way to drumming the visiting Owls 101-53 Saturday afternoon in the Stormy Petrels' season opener.
Oglethorpe had its entire staring lineup in the scoring column during that initial stretch which saw the Petrels go out to a 16-0 lead.
"I really thought we did a good job sharing the ball and playing together," said Head Coach Alex Richey. "We saw a lot of positives to take from the game itself and plenty of things to work on moving forward."
Five Petrels ended the game in double figures, all recording career highs. Emma Perna's team high 14 topped her previous high of 12; Carly Henderson's 13 topped her previous high of 11; Rose Dolmovich matched her career high of 12; and freshmen Morgan Skipper (13) and Gabby Hudson (11) debuted in double figures.
This was indeed a total team effort as 11 players made at least one field goal and tallied at least one rebound. Ellie Ronan and Sydney Bumgardaner had the most in the latter category with nine apiece. Bumgardaner closed in on a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Ronan had five points and nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
After Oglethorpe's initial 16-0 run to start the game, the teams played an even second quarter before Oglethorpe put together a 24-4 run near the start of the second half. This included a 10-0 run and big 3-pointers from Dolmovich and Perna.
The Petrels then extended the lead even further in the fourth quarter. Charity Cloud scored a fastbreak bucket at the 3:43 mark for the largest lead of 49, and Perna's basket in the final 10 seconds put the team over the century mark.
