Women’s basketball adds to home win streak

ATLANTA—It was freshman Keimarya Rivera's career-high 26 points that led the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels to a 69-63 victory over the Hawks of Huntingdon College. The forward from Canton, Georgia, shot 83% from the field going 10-12 and 6-8 from the free-throw line.

The Petrels won what was a back-and-forth effort through the entire game, winning at home for the second time in as many games this December. Oglethorpe got ahead early in the first, ending the quarter with a 19-10 lead thanks to Rivera's 13 first-quarter points. 

The Hawks came closer in the second quarter, Huntingdon outscoring the Petrels 16-14. Oglethorpe headed into the half up 33-26. 

In the third, six Hawks found the scoring column outscoring the Petrels 22-14 and taking the lead into the fourth quarter 48-47. Oglethorpe would return the favor scoring 22 points to the Hawks' 15, winning the contest 69-63.

Oglethorpe's freshman impact was felt all over the court in the win over the Hawks. Gabby Hudson nearly recorded her second double-double of the season posting 10 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Malia Melton added eight points and six rebounds on 30 minutes played, while guard Mia Geveke was all over the stat sheet with six points, four rebounds and four assists shooting 100% (2-2) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Game Notes

  • Rivera posted a 20-point game for the third time in seven games.
  • All nine Petrels who entered the game made their way into the scoring column.
  • Melton registered a career high for scoring (eight), Geveke a career high for assists (four) and Morgan Skipper a career high with two blocks.
  • The win kept Oglethorpe perfect in the month of December.
  • The Petrels currently sit at .500 with a 4-4 record this the season.

Oglethorpe hosts two more opponents in Dorough Field House before the new year, Maryville College and Salisbury University.  Tip-off against Maryville is set for Saturday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. and Salisbury for Thursday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m.
