ATLANTA – The Stormy Petrels won their third in a row at home in what was a low-scoring affair for both sides after Oglethorpe defeated Maryville College 51-41. Defense was the name of the game as defensive pressure from both teams made it hard for both the Petrels' and the Scots' shots to fall in the first half. Gabby Hudson's career-high 19 points were enough to push the Petrels to victory.
The first quarter featured four different scorers for the Petrels. Freshman guard Mia Geveke's five points led Oglethorpe, which would go into the second quarter up 12-9. Scoring was scarce in the second, as Oglethorpe outscored Maryville 9-5 thanks to freshman duo Hudson and Keimarya Rivera's five and four points, respectively. The Petrels led 21-14 heading into halftime.
The third quarter showcased the closest scoring differential of the game with Oglethorpe pushing past Maryville 14-13 with both Hudson and Carly Henderson recording seven points in the quarter. Oglethorpe headed into the final quarter of regulation up 35-27. The story stayed true in the fourth quarter, as both teams scored their most points in a single quarter, with the Petrels outscoring the Scots 16-14.
Rivera was one rebound shy of posting her second double-double of December. She totaled 13 points and nine rebounds playing 37 minutes.
The Stormy Petrels now sit at a positive 5-4 record, after being at or just under .500 since November 19.
