ATLANTA - In their first home game of the season, Oglethorpe's women's lacrosse overwhelmed the Pfeiffer University Falcons until the final score was 17-7. This is the Petrels' second win in a row.
Freshman Makenna Bowens was a major player this game, making all four of her goals in the first two quarters. Bowens only took four shots on the goal, making all of them. Additionally, sophomores Kaitlynn Alford and Ally Moir each scored three goals. Like Bowens, Alford's number of goals and shots on goal were equal.
Kendall White scored the first point of the game, paving the way for the Stormy Petrels. Oglethorpe went on to score a total of eight goals in the first quarter, while Pfeiffer only scored one. The Stormy Petrels kept the Falcons in check in the second quarter as well, only allowing them to score twice as Oglethorpe jumped from eight to 14 goals by the end of the quarter.
After halftime, things slowed down as both teams scored their final few goals. The third quarter saw Pfieffer once more only amass one goal, compared to Oglethorpe's three. The first and last of those three were made by senior Taty Harris.
The Falcons seemed to flip the script in the fourth quarter, scoring three goals as the Petrels were unable to score any. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Oglethorpe was already well in the lead at the start of the final quarter. The Petrels were able to come out on top, with a final score of 17-7.
The Stormy Petrels were successful on 6-of-6 clears, scooped 28 ground balls, and forced 17 turnovers. The Petrels made almost double Pfieffer's shots on goal, with the Petrels taking 26 and the Falcons taking 15.
Oglethorpe's next game is at home again, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. against Erskine College. The Petrels will hit the road again later in the week, taking on nearby Brenau University on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 12 p.m.
