Stormy Petrels toppled by Colonels on the road

DANVILLE, KY - After a hard-fought game against the Centre College Colonels, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels ultimately could not keep up, and were swept away into a final score of 67-52.

This game saw nine Petrels in the scoring column, led by freshman Emma Perna with 10 points.

Freshman Ellie Ronan was the first to score in the game, sending Oglethorpe on what seemed to be the high road. That is, until Centre tied the score at 7-7 with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. It was the Colonels who broke the tie, until the Petrels caught back up as the score went back and forth until the first quarter ended with the score at 14-14.

Centre was ahead of Oglethorpe for most of the second quarter, until a 24-24 tie with 3:20 remaining. The score once again went back and forth, and after another tie, the Petrels headed into halftime just behind the Colonels at 29-28.

Once again, the Colonels were able to get the upper hand, going on a devastating 14-3 run that set the Petrels scarily behind. Centre held a constant 10 or more point lead until the end of the third quarter, and into the fourth.

By the middle of the fourth quarter, Oglethorpe was close to slimming out the gap between the two teams. But the lead gained in the third quarter proved to be too wide for the Petrels to conquer, as Oglethorpe was only able to get within five points of the Colonels. After a tough fourth quarter, the Colonels triumphed over the Stormy Petrels with a final score of 67-52.

The women's basketball team will stay on the road for their next game, facing Berry College on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the regular-season finale. The Southern Athletic Association tournament starts Sunday, Feb. 20.
