Women's basketball overtaken by Rhodes in SAA Championship

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- After a hard fought battle against Rhodes College, the Oglethorpe women's basketball team was unable to claim the SAA title as the Lynx settled the game at 77-61.

The 2022 SAA Championship game saw 10 Petrels in the scoring column, impressively led by senior Sydni Donovan totaling 24 points and 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. This was her sixth time scoring over 20 points in a game this season, and in her collegiate career.

The first quarter was neck-and-neck for the Lynx and Stormy Petrels, but Rhodes began to pull ahead in the second quarter. Oglethorpe was able to keep the gap small until right before halftime, when Rhodes went on a 13-3 run in the last three minutes. The Petrels headed into halftime with some catching up to do, as Rhodes led 39-27.

The third quarter proved to be the kicker for Oglethorpe, as the Petrels struggled to catch back up. Rhodes continued to push ahead, and ended the quarter at 60-46.

The Petrels kicked off the fourth quarter, but the Lynx once again swooped in and controlled the court. Oglethorpe was unable to overcome Rhodes as the game ended in a loss for the Petrels, 77-61.

"It is always tough when the journey comes to an end, but to see how far this group has come in such a short period of time is something that everyone can hold their heads high about," said Head Coach Alex Richey.

The Stormy Petrels closed their 2021-2022 season with a record of 10-18 overall, and 4-9 in the SAA. Coach Richey added, "These young women worked so hard this season, even in the face of adversity, and never gave up. It was a privilege to coach them, and they left it all on the court today for one another. Although we came up just a little bit short, how we ended our year with this postseason run was something special to be a part of that I will cherish for a long time."
