Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Successful senior day for men’s lacrosse

ATLANTA - Before the game began, the Petrels took a moment to celebrate this year's seniors. That energy led the way to the men's lacrosse team getting back on a winning streak after defeating Averett University 15-5.

Seniors Addison Irwin, Collin Sides, and Wyatt Jonske were all recognized and presented with mementos before the game began. All three have spent all four years on the team. Sides has been a team captain for three years, and Jonske a captain for all four years. Irwin is currently the Southern Athletic Association and Oglethorpe record holder for the most saves in a single season (241 in 2019).

Richard Bedgood IV led with six goals to break Oglethorpe's single season scoring record, which now stands at 37. Jazz Washington made two goals and 4 assists, and Max Brand made two goals and three assists. Irwin made 12 saves, and Xavier Duax made three saves in just four minutes of action. Sides caused six turnovers, now the team leader in the category.

The Stormy Petrels started off strong, with Bedgood and Carsen Van Note making a combined three goals for Oglethorpe before the Cougars could score. The second quarter saw Oglethorpe score two goals before the Cougars could make their one and only goal in the quarter. The Stormy Petrels headed into halftime miles ahead of the Cougars, at 11-2.

The third quarter saw the Cougars attempt a comeback, scoring twice as Oglethorpe was only able to score once. But the Petrels picked up the slack in the final quarter, only allowing Averett to score once as Oglethorpe scored three more goals to end the game at 15-5.

Overall, the Stormy Petrels scooped 41 round balls, had 16 successful clears, won 18 face-offs, and caused 31 turnovers. This was the second win in a row for men's lacrosse, and the team is now 5-4 for the season so far.

The team will hit the road next weekend to begin conference play, facing Sewanee on Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m. The Stormy Petrels will stay on the road for a string of games, until the next home game on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. against Centre.
