Game Recap: Baseball |

James’ gem not enough but Petrels answer with big win

CONWAY, Ark. – Colby James suffered a loss despite allowing only one run over six and two-third innings in a 1-0 defeat in game one, but the Oglethorpe baseball team bounced back with a 14-7 victory in game two to come away with a split doubleheader Saturday afternoon against No. 25 Hendrix.

James' lone run came in the third inning when a one-out double followed by a single allowed Hendrix to plate the only run of the game. Otherwise, James went completely unblemished, scattering five hits and two walks in the longest start of the season for the sophomore. Jake Hill pitched equally effectively in James' relief, going one and one-third innings of scoreless baseball on one hit and one walk.

Offensively, the Stormy Petrels were tough to get going for James and Hill in the Southern Athletic Association series opener, but that all changed in game two when a Carson Weir two-out double in the first inning plated two to ignite the team's highest scoring output of the season. Shota Barbeau and Will Arnold continued the scoring frenzy in the second inning by matching Weir with two-out doubles of their own as Oglethorpe went ahead 6-0.

Despite Hendrix rallying with a big third inning, Oglethorpe pushed more runs across in the fifth, sixth and seventh to run away with the win. Connor Ledet and Sam Mills both hit two-RBI singles in the fifth; Rajan Sampat hit an RBI single in the sixth; and Mills and Mason Pearcy both hit RBI doubles in the seventh.

Pearcy and Andrew Noack both posted three-hit games in Oglethorpe's win that evened the series. Hill was able to pick up the win in relief after pitching two-plus innings starting in the third.

Up next, Oglethorpe and Hendrix finish the series Sunday with a rubber game set to start at 1 p.m. After that, the Stormy Petrels will travel to LaGrange Tuesday and be home for another SAA series next weekend, hosting Millsaps.
