LAGRANGE, Ga. – Carter Guarino drew a bases-loaded walk to break the final tie shortly before Sam Mills drove in two runs with a single to right field, and the Oglethorpe baseball team scored seven runs in the final three innings to come away with a 9-7 victory over No. 4 LaGrange on Tuesday. The win marked the third in a row for the Stormy Petrels, all against national top-25 competition.
The game featured a lot of scoring and several ties, from the early going all the way down to the wire. LaGrange jumped on top with a 3-0 lead through two innings before singles from Andrew Noack and Guarino helped the Stormy Petrels chip into the lead in the fourth and fifth. It was then a three-run seventh, highlighted by a pair of doubles from Harrison Hall and Jonathan Cruz, that saw Oglethorpe take the lead, and a bases-loaded walk to Cruz in the eighth made the lead 6-3.
LaGrange then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game once again, setting up a thrilling ninth. The top half of that final inning featured the aforementioned scoring, Mills picking up his third hit to give the Petrels some much-needed insurance. In the bottom half, LaGrange loaded the bases with one out, drove a run in with a groundout, then once again loaded the bases with two out.
The tying run came to second with the winning run on first when Noack snagged a line drive labeled for left field to end the threat. Â
Mills and Will Arnold both finished the game 3-for-5 while Mason Pearcy and Hall both finished with two hits. Colin Stewart (3.0 IP) and Grant Guinther (1.1) highlighted the pitching staff with a combined four and one-third innings of scoreless relief. Will Marconi finished off the final inning and a third to pick up the win.
Oglethorpe's next game will start another three-game Southern Athletic Association series when the Petrels welcome Millsaps to Hermance Stadium Saturday and Sunday.
