ATLANTA – A five-run first inning helped the Oglethorpe baseball team pick up the win in game one, but a three-run first by Millsaps in game two evened the series in a Saturday afternoon Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Hermance Stadium. Oglethorpe won game one 9-5 but fell in game two 6-3.
Colby James and Jake Hill were sharp in the opener of the series. James took the win while Hill earned the save, both firsts of the season, after the pair combined for only three earned runs over nine innings.
James struck out three in six and two-third innings before Hill helped him out of a seventh-inning bases-loaded jam. Oglethorpe led 7-4 at that point and Millsaps managed to get the tying run on base, but Hill coaxed a flyout to left to end the threat. Hill later escaped some self-induced trouble in the ninth by getting three straight flyouts to end the game.
Oglethorpe's pitching in game two was nearly as effective as game one, but the Stormy Petrels could not match their scoring output in the game-two loss. Colin Stewart and Andrew Noack both worked strong relief efforts, Stewart allowing only one earned run over four innings and Noack pitching an eight-pitch perfect seventh. However, the Majors' three-run first off Noah Cole proved to be the difference in the game.
Oglethorpe's scoring in game one came in four innings. The five-run first saw Carter Guarino drive in the first run on only the sixth pitch of the game. Then, Jonathan Cruz drove in a run, Mason Pearcy drove in a run, and Noack drove in a run.
Guarino would follow again in the second inning with another RBI single, and Carson Weir scored in the third on a double steal attempt. Sam Mills also brought home a run with an RBI double in the seventh, followed by Cruz who drove in Mills in the next at-bat.
Oglethorpe trailed 5-0 in game two before staging a rally attempt in the fifth that cut the deficit in half. Cruz drove home the first run with a double and Mills and Cruz also scored on productive at-bats from Weir and Shota Barbeau, but the Petrels never got any closer than 5-3.
