ATLANTA – Sam Mills capped a five-run fourth inning with a two-out, two-run double, and Oglethorpe's baseball team took the rubber game against Millsaps, 10-7, Sunday afternoon at Hermance Stadium. The win was the Stormy Petrels' fifth in the last six games.
Oglethorpe (13-14, 6-6 Southern Athletic Association) battled back from a deficit twice in the early going before surging into a lead it would not relinquish in the fourth. Carson Weir started that inning off with a double down the right field line, then came home to score on a Connor Ledet RBI single three batters later. Harrison Hall and Shota Barbeau followed with run-scoring outs before Mills launched a two-run double to right center to make it 6-2.
The Stormy Petrels held the lead the rest of the way, but Millsaps managed to keep the game close all the way to the end. The Majors cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fifth, but Oglethorpe answered with a two-run bottom half that included Hall battling back from an 0-2 count to draw a 10-pitch, bases-loaded walk. Will Arnold also hit a sacrifice fly in the inning to score Andrew Noack.
The Majors again made it a close game in the ninth when a pair of walks put two on with one out in a 10-6 ballgame. One of those walks came home to score on an RBI double, and the Majors even put the tying run on base when another walk loaded the bases with the score 10-7. Will Marconi escaped the threat with his second strikeout.
Harry Paul made the start on the hill and pitched effectively for four and two-third innings before Grant Guinther pitched a superb relief role across the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, allowing only two hits and two walks in three and two-third innings. Guinther earned the winning decision to improve to 5-1.
Jonathan Cruz and Weir both tallied multiple hits to lead the team at the plate. Cruz went 2-for-5 while Weir went 2-for-3 with two walks.
