SEWANEE, Tenn. – Five runs on four hits in the eighth inning helped Oglethorpe's baseball team rally to beat Sewanee 6-3 in the opener of a Southern Athletic Association series Saturday afternoon.
Colby James pitched another outstanding game with only three runs allowed over the first six innings, scattering eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts. He allowed a two-out, two-run single in the second before hitting a batter with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth, otherwise producing an unblemished effort.
Oglethorpe's offense had no support for James during his six innings but came through in a big way late in the game. Andrew Noack started the eighth-inning rally with a walk, then the next four reached, including Sam Mills who delivered with a two-run single that tied the game. Jonathan Cruz followed in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to give the Stormy Petrels the lead, and it would be all the runs they would need.
Jake Hill and Will Marconi sat the last six Tigers down in order for a perfect eighth and ninth to seal the win.
Oglethorpe and Sewanee finish the series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
