Game Recap: Baseball |

Pearcy’s slam helps Petrels sweep Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Another late rally in game one, then a one-sided victory in game two, and Oglethorpe's baseball team swept Sewanee in a three-game Southern Athletic Association set Sunday afternoon. Oglethorpe scored five runs in the last three innings to win game one 8-7 in 10 innings, then scored eight runs across the third and fourth inning to win game two 8-1.

The red-hot Stormy Petrels won for the eighth time in the last nine games, including taking their fourth straight victory.

Oglethorpe 8, Sewanee 7 | Game One

Like game one of the series on Saturday, Sunday's first game featured a late rally by the Petrels. They trailed 6-3 through seven before trimming the deficit to one after eight, tying it in the ninth, and winning it with two runs in the 10th.

Andrew Noack got the late rally started with a sacrifice fly in the eighth that brought home Shota Barbeau to make it 6-4. Will Arnold followed with an RBI single to make it 6-5, then an inning later Barbeau drove in Will Hutcherson to tie it at 6-6.

Jonathan Cruz gave the Petrels the final big hit with a two-run single in the 10th, scoring Connor Ledet and Arnold.

Arnold, Mills and Harrison Hall all finished game one with three hits. Grant Guinther pitched a phenomenal relief effort with seven strikeouts over four innings, during which time he allowed only three hits and one run. He picked up the win to improve to 6-1 while Will Marconi earned his fourth save by finishing out the game in the 10th.

Oglethorpe 8, Sewanee 1 | Game Two

All the scoring the Petrels needed in game two came in the third inning. After Cruz singled in one run to open the scoring, Mason Pearcy hit a grand slam to cap a five-run inning and put the Petrels on top 5-0. An inning later, Cruz and Pearcy both hit RBI singles to make it 8-0, more than enough scoring for Noah Cole who pitched a complete game allowing only four hits and one unearned run.

Pearcy's three-hit game came alongside five RBI's and a run scored. Cruz also had multiple hits with two, and he added two runs and three RBI's.
